This week, we’ll highlight winners of our Music Educators Award! Each year, your RPO opens up nominations for outstanding music educators and professional musicians in the Rochester area. Recipients will be honored on March 21st during the Zarathustra! concert.

Today, we present Andrea Somerville. Born and raised in Rochester, New York, Andrea currently teaches strings in the Greece Central School District. An early participant in the Suzuki outreach program between the Eastman School of Music and the Greece Central School District, she graduated from the Greece CSD and went on to study music education, with an emphasis on violin, at the Crane School of Music, SUNY Potsdam. She started her career as a string educator in Brockport Central Schools before moving to Ohio to pursue her master’s degree in music education at Bowling Green State University. After her master’s degree was complete, Andrea moved back to the Rochester area to be near family and continue her career in string education.
Andrea continues to perform throughout Rochester, Buffalo, and the Finger Lakes region as a violinist in community orchestras, pit orchestras for musicals, and a violinist with the Angelicus String Quartet. Andrea is also a member of the service organization, Zonta International, where she is chair of multiple committees. Andrea has served on the Monroe County School Music Association committee as the Sr. High All County Orchestra Coordinator and has served on the RPO’s Music Educator’s Committee. Just last year, she had the privilege to conduct the Finger Lakes All County Elementary Orchestra. Andrea has a passion for string education and enjoys working with students of all ages in hopes of spreading the joy of music.
Congrats, Andrea!
